What motivates you? How do you motivate others? Whether they work for you, or you are trying to motivate customers to a buy from you, in some aspect of your day, in some form, you will be called on to inspire others. What motivates one may not motivate another. So, how do you do it? Motivating and inspiring others begins with an understanding of what things they consider most important. Ultimately everyone wants to feel happy, appreciated, and empowered.

One example of motivation for customers might be through the feeling of empowerment found through sales and discounts. However there are other ways to inspire, like seasonal decorations and music to create ambiance and a happy mood. For this reason retailers are quick to pull out Christmas trees, bright twinkling lights and jolly music to get people in the spirit to buy long before the holiday season arrives.

Is etiquette important to you? Do you think people in general are as concerned about etiquette today as they were in years past? The advent of the cell phone certainly changed a lot in terms of how people behave publicly. Internet communications are another area where people have loosened their standards of behavior, mostly due to the illusion of anonymity. In the business world, courteous behavior and good manners are very important to maintain.

Here are a few tips to stay classy:

Keep communications positive and upbeat.
Personalize your communications online, respond to all questions and messages.
Remember good manners with “please” and “thank you.”
Use punctuation marks.
Take off the caps lock when typing. Responses in call caps come across to some as shouting.
Return phone calls in a timely manner. If leaving a voicemail remember to talk clearly and slowly.
Be conscious of your surroundings if using a cell phone, speaking in tones that will not disturb others.
Get in the habit of setting your phone to ‘vibrate’ if you are in a meeting or public place.
Good manners are as important now as they ever were. In the words of Emily Post, “Good manners reflect something from inside-an innate sense of consideration for others and respect for self.”
